Designed by Konstantin Grcic for Vitra, the Citizen Chair is a product whose unconventional construction enables a surprisingly new way of sitting that is perfect for the new home office needs. Citizen was primarily developed for private interiors, but also has affinities with several other designs created by Konstantin Grcic and Vitra to address the needs of new working environments; this dual-purposed design is more relevant than ever as the two spaces blur.
The Citizen Chair redefines the concept of seating comfort through innovative design and meticulous engineering. Its seat is ingeniously suspended on three cables, seamlessly attached to a robust steel frame, facilitating a swinging movement in every direction. The fixed backrest, with its semicircular contour, embraces the upper body ergonomically, ensuring a posture-perfect seating experience and preventing any tendency to slouch. Adding to its flexibility, the cantilever structural frame of the Citizen Chair is skillfully mounted on a swivel base, allowing for enhanced mobility and adaptability.

Konstantin Grcic, the visionary mind behind the Citizen chair, expressed the culmination of years of collaborative effort in its development. He remarked, “Citizen combines familiar elements with an entirely new type of construction, which we developed together over many years. For me, it was a very enriching experience to devote so much time and attention to the development of a single idea.”
With its groundbreaking design and meticulous attention to detail, the Citizen chair emerges as a testament to the fusion of innovation, comfort, and aesthetic finesse in contemporary seating.
