The London Design Biennale and its Inspirational Events

Biennale

What does it take to host the iconic London Design Biennale? It includes creativity ingredients, mixed with millions of passionate design thinking processes. The London Design Biennale is a huge event featuring international designers. It hosts exhibitions and installations meant to solve universal issues. The Biennale was started in 2016 by Sir John Sorrell CBE and Ben Evans CBE. Consequently, they aimed to make the design purposeful and distinctive.

Furthermore, a specific theme is assigned to the event. All designs must revolve around this subject and touch higher levels of humanity. For this year, the theme is The Global Game: Remapping Collaborations. The biennale is held at Somerset House from 1st June to 25th June. The Artistic Director for 2023 is the Nieuwe  Instituut, led by its General and Artistic Director, Aric Chen.

Similarly, this year, over 40 exhibitors will display their magnificent designs. Moreover, there will be a new edition named EUREKA. This will showcase design innovation from the research centers of the UK. Hence, it will promote a fresh wave of creativity and breed ideas from various
experts.

WHAT DOES THE BIENNALE INCLUDE?

Well, in a nutshell, it’s a true rollercoaster ride. The Biennale will host the London Design Biennale exhibition, the Multi sensory bread making workshop, a short film called ‘Sentinels’ and a few other iconic events. It will also bring light to EUREKA which will run parallel to the events. Moreover, the Biennale awards 4 medals to the most impressive pavilions. Three medals were awarded by the International Jury on 1st June. These were presented to pavilions of Poland, Abu Dhabi and Taiwan. The fourth medal will be awarded on 21st June, as per the voting by the public.

A FEW UNMISSABLE INSTALLATIONS:

Different countries have come forward to treat the Biennale as a cooperation rather than a mere exhibition. There are few installations with unmatched design and beauty.

Biennale
Poetics Of Necessity: A multinational pavilion organized by Poland: It is a humanitarian project to showcase the importance of windows in the war stricken country of Ukraine. Thus, it collaborated with local architects and donated windows to Ukraine.
Materia Prestada by Chile: It displays sheets of bio textiles made from tree cellulose and natural dyes. It explores the future of biomaterials and their uses.

AN ODE TO EUREKA – THE BIENNIALE’S SPOTLIGHT:

EUREKA will represent creative design thinking inside university research departments. It symbolizes the role of young minds and institutions in design. Likewise, EUREKA has a few incredible works, including: The Arcade Britannia by Canterbury Christ Church University, displays a digital recreation of two 1980s British arcades.

Biennale
On the other hand, The Garden by Kingston University is a short documentary film based on ‘Spool Loom’. Likewise, Flip The Script by NICA, Undercurrents by Glasgow School of Art and many more are must to watch. Thus, the London Design Biennale is a moment of pride. It gives a glimpse into the potential of a million designers. It is the building of the future of healthy design.
