Arushi Arts is a 25-year vintage endeavor, primarily based in New Delhi, aiming to sell pleasant modern artwork from India across the world. Working with practices that might be colorful and eclectic, the gallery`s program of exhibitions expresses a lot of stylistic tendencies and influences, each from the East and the West, selling an idiom that is Indian in ethos but global. Here is an interview with the Director of Arushi Arts, Ms Payal Kapoor.
Can you share your journey of being an art gallerist and organizing art exhibitions within and beyond the country? Can you give a brief about the upcoming art show and its splendid name?
Arushi Arts is in its 25th year since its inception and, I have been the founder director of this gallery since then. We have exhibited Indian artworks all over the world like LA, London, Paris, Singapore, and New York as well as done almost 200 shows in Indian cities like Mumbai, Calcutta, and Bangalore. Arushi Arts is dedicated to promoting Indian art but after the pandemic, we realized that like how the world became one in fighting this also art has no boundaries and all good art deserves to be shown so we invited international artists from the UK, America, France, and Africa alongside our contemporary Indian artists from various states and cities of India. This show came about with the uniqueness of the artwork of each artist showing that each artist’s intention is just to paint art and show good art. and that art has no boundaries. This show is part of the parallel art shows selected for the Indian art fair.
How do you find and select artists and artworks for an exhibition? What are the challenges faced in organizing an art exhibition on such a huge scale?
We faced many challenges from getting works to be sent from so many artists across countries to releasing them to coordinating with the artist’s timings as when it was done for us for most artists it was night. Also, language was a barrier we crossed while communicating but all artists gave their best pieces for this show. It is indeed a true blend of the East and west.
How has Arushi Arts Gallery grown and evolved in the past years and what are its future visions?
In the upcoming art fair Arushi Arts will be showing 3 important living traditions or vernacular artists. Arushi Arts plans to hold residencies and workshops for international artists in India. We also have started the dkjain art prize in the last 7 years where we have an eminent jury and give awards and an art show to the winner every year. This is for artists in the vernacular textile weavers or artists working with both. the vernacular artists are extremely talented but are fast disappearing to become construction workers or go to work leaving their traditions behind. We want to protect and revive these artists as well as help them to view their work in the modern context of the present-day world.
You have been an art gallerist for a long period. What differences have you witnessed between the traditional artists and upcoming contemporary artists?
International artists are systematic and well organized on concepts whereas traditional artists are skill-based and work with spontaneity.
