The pleasant October of 2020, dawned a pleasant surprise for Dubai- the ultimate Dubai Collection. The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (DCAA), launched a ground-breaking initiative to bejewel the shining city of Dubai, through the Dubai Collection under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This collection in simple terms, hosts the beauty of artworks, not just from Dubai but from a wider spectrum. The artworks are gathered, made to go through a critical analysis by a committee, and thereafter it paves a journey into temporary exhibitions and display. These artworks then find a permanent residence in the Digital Museum.
Cultural Tapestry of The Dubai Collection
The Dubai Collection celebrates work of art, its definitions, and the efforts that go into establishing a masterpiece. It is built to uplift the cultural beauty of Dubai and to embellish the city with sprinkles of magical caliber. The Digital Museum isn’t just the shelter for artworks but also offers educational materials, analysis, and perspectives to get a finer view of the piece. Various committees were formulated to ensure the smooth blending of the collection.
The Steering Committee chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, includes UAE cultural leaders who are unbiased and receptive, ensuring that the collection keeps broadening and updating its horizons. The Curatorial Committee chaired by Muna al Gurg has the explicit work of selecting artworks, reviewing each work individually, and allowing their entry only based on artistic abilities. This Committee also meets the Patron regularly to get a hand over new acquisitions.
Fostering Global Unity
The collection has no international boundaries yet the artworks are supposed to carry a sense of openness, and inclusivity and should connect the broken lineage of humanity. Patronage spirits up the powerful energy of the Dubai Collection and contributes to this process of constructing an enlightening legacy. They are technically the legal owners of the artwork and hence a loan agreement flows between the two parties, which secures the inclusion of the patron’s artwork in the collection for at least a decade. To support creative talents, the collection will welcome artworks from both- established and emerging artists, fabricating the expertise of every artist.
The first exhibition of the Dubai Collection commenced between October 2021 to May 2022 at the Etihad Museum in Dubai and was curated by Nada Shabout. While artwork is a revolutionary statement in itself, this initiative is more than a revolution, it’s a change towards respecting and understanding the world of artistic intellect.
