Saldhana Vilas by Architect Meera Pyarelal in Bengaluru beautifully blends Indian aesthetics with modern functionality, creating a harmonious space for a multi-generational family. Spanning 2,000 sq. ft., the home was designed for an IT couple from Kerala and Mangalore, their two young boys, and a grandmother. The family envisioned a space that could honor their rich heritage while accommodating their contemporary lifestyle. With a thoughtful balance of traditional Indian craftsmanship and modern design elements, the home reflects the philosophy of sustainability and timeless elegance.
A Home Rooted in Tradition and Indian Aesthetics
The entrance sets the tone for this stunning residence, featuring a repurposed Kerala door paired with a customized Goan-style blue-and-white nameplate. Inside, the entry foyer exudes colonial charm with a teak wood console mirror and a stone lamp. The living room combines jewel-toned furniture with family heirlooms, creating a cozy and vibrant atmosphere. Wooden wicker chairs contrast beautifully with a modern green sofa, while the decor thoughtfully integrates traditional Indian aesthetics.
The dining area continues this harmonious blend with a classic six-seater table, vintage Kerala pillars, and plates from Good Earth’s Thierry Journo collection adorning the walls. Adjacent to the dining space is a cozy balcony that doubles as a stylish bar, adding character and functionality to the home.
A Contemporary Celebration of Indian Aesthetics
Artisanal details run throughout the home, such as the use of Athangudi tiles, which showcase the meticulous craftsmanship at its core. The mother’s room features a colonial-style bed with antique tiles, a muted palette of browns and greens, and watercolor paintings of Kochi that evoke nostalgia.
In the master bedroom, a cane bed and arched white wardrobe create a serene retreat, while custom cushions and soothing artwork add character. The lacquered green kitchen is a perfect blend of form and function, hiding appliances while meeting the demands of Indian cooking.
The children’s room embodies playful sophistication, with a bunk bed offering ample storage and wallpaper from Kalkaari Haath adding charm. The home as a whole reflects the family’s love for their heritage, blending traditional and modern elements seamlessly.
Saldhana Vilas is more than a house—it’s a celebration of Indian aesthetics, sustainability, and thoughtful design, creating a timeless haven for a family that cherishes both its past and future.
