Bang & Olufsen have announced their latest home speaker, the Beosound Balance which has been designed in collaboration with Benjamin Hubert from the UK based design agency, LAYER.
The Bang & Olufsen Beosound Balance speaker comes in a choice of two colors, Natural Oak and Black Oak. Layer describes the two-part shape as one that “disrupts the monoblock format of most speakers in the market,” with the wood base appearing like a plinth for an artwork or a vase.
But the design also speaks to how the object functions – the heavy wood contains the bass speaker, while the lighter-looking fabric cylinder contains the mid- and top-end speakers. The omnidirectional bass driver is positioned vertically in the timber block and topped with a metal mesh dish, perforated in a Fibonacci sequence – a series of numbers that are created by adding up the two numbers before it.
One of those new people was Benjamin Hubert of Layer. Hubert’s studio, based in London’s Hackney, has worked on many projects that bridge the realms of art, design and technology, alongside names like Airbus and Panasonic as well as new paradigm companies like Neo, Trove and the brand he co-founded with Asad Hair, Nolii. The collaboration with B&O seemed like a natural fit. ‘They visited our studio a few years ago,’ Hubert acknowledges, ‘we both play in this space between art and furniture and they connected with that.’ The Beosound Balance is their first joint project.
The touch interface is indicated by symbols laser-etched into the aluminium top, and the speaker also responds to voice commands. It comes with Google Assistant built in, with Amazon Alexa support coming later in 2020.
