The Japanese word, Shibusa, translates to aesthetics carrying a simple, modest, and subtle beauty. The effortlessness of a design created from such a word, stands graceful in its feature, with rough textures and a muddy palette. Incorporating this beauty into interiors, Architect Veeram Shah, from Design Ni Dukaan, crafted Pune’s gorgeous house, spreading across an area of 2000 square meters, and naming it as ‘The Shibusa House’.
The house was designed for an Indian client, having a family of three, including their 20-month-old baby, and hence a chic yet functional look was given birth in this home. Design Ni Dukaan, is a studio based in Ahmedabad, specializing in interior, architectural, and furniture products, with a touch of elegance. Through this design too, Veeram Shah continued the base style of the studio and narrated a mystical tale, through the materials, the placement of elements, and placid colors.
The story begins with Veeram’s choice of tranquil and traditional materials, keeping in mind the baby’s age, making it innocuous and safe for the child. The materials dashed in were brass, wood, cane, lime plaster, concrete, stone, and fluted glass, all to fit adroitly in the design while celebrating and harnessing the specific properties of each material in the best way possible.
Shibusa House: The Home Tour
The next chapter of this tale shows us how starting from the foyer to the bedrooms at the end, everything has the quality of being candor at the core. The foyer welcomes you with a dramatic entrance, while a yellow backdrop flows you towards the hall inside. Your eyes will fall in love with the moving swing, the wooden cupboard with geometric handles, circular ceiling lights and lamps, and the minimalist dining table in the hall, while automatically guiding you to a kitchen with no doors but a handful of bar stools. Like a Chinese painting, the home will tell your eyes exactly where to go, and further flutter you towards the relaxed bedrooms and a peaceful balcony.
What Do The Bedrooms Recite?
The bedrooms stand together like verses of a poem, each verse conveying its distinct features but a commonness of carrying a calm aura. The master bedroom is adorned with blue and pristine white, drizzled with wooden furniture, allowing the sunlight to dance through the windows. The guest room, softly boasts a harmonious blend of yellow and beige, while the third room has wooden cabinets on its wall, leaving the rest of the area empty so that it can be used as a multipurpose space by the client.
Interestingly, Veeram has given a new face and push to the walls. Ditching the usual structure, he removed walls from unnecessary regions, which allowed him to add fascinating inserts. For example, the kitchen’s entrance has a partition, such that one can see who has entered the house, and could also be embellished with a soft board for reminders and a space for settling keys, above all creating a hide-and-seek-like section. Interestingly, when the team went to the site, a day before shooting the fully primed home, they decided to scatter a few fruits here and there and also created a character to showcase the practicality of the elements used, all leading to an ‘aam aadmi’ composition for the pictures to be clicked.
In this house, the compelling architect, Veeram Shah has defined ‘Shibusa’ in its true sense, and with a perfect amalgamation, he has uplifted the texture of every material, the hidden secrets of every color used, fulfilling the client’s demands and setting light for a contemporary and minimalist home.
