The new range of ceramics that feature cookware as well as serveware, highlights the localized techniques of the crafting process as well as the versatility of the material composition of the Longpi clay. Tiipoi has collaborated with Indian master craftsman Mathew Sasa to create this ceramic collection. The collection consists of two multipurpose pots a pan, and two serving bowls that nest one within the other, called Karipot, Karipan, and Karibowl.
This method of making ceramic is an ancient one. Powdered serpentine stone found in the hills surrounding Longpi is mixed with clay dredged from the river found in the valley. This stoneware is made by hand shaping over a plaster mold, and then polishing it using improvised tools like bamboo sticks and stones.
The objects are then fired in an open bonfire, and smoked in sawdust made from local foliage. This firing process gives the ceramic pieces their distinctive black coloring. Through this collection, we want to challenge the definition of “craft” as a limiting label.
The cookware pieces can be used widely on a range of heat sources, from the hob – both gas and electric – to the oven. The collection celebrates oven-to-table style eating and is perfect for one-pot dishes. Ideal for slow cooking, but also everyday meals.
Contribution of Tiipoi to Modern Kitchens
The Longpi collection from Tiipoi prides itself in being food-safe without any chemical coatings – such as PFOA used in non-stick pans – common with industrially produced cookware. The natural properties of the materials – stone, and clay- enhance the cooking experience, while preserving the ingredients’ oils and flavors. The burnishing process makes the cooking surface naturally non-stick. Once cooked, the pot also stays warmer for longer when on the table.
The main reason behind the Longpi cookware being sustainable is that it is unglazed and made using only a single low firing (800-950 degrees Celsius). Most stoneware and earthenware ceramics require glazing and at least two firings at much higher temperatures. Additionally, most glazes also do not allow the ceramic material to be returned to the earth.
This ceramic material from Longpi is completely natural and can withstand high temperatures even though it is low-fired. At the end of its life cycle, it can be returned to the earth without any environmental impact.
