The Bisazza Foundation, renowned for its dedication to art and culture, presents a groundbreaking achievement in the world of contemporary photography. “Love-Dream, Love-Nothing” stands as the first permanent installation globally to feature the works of the celebrated Japanese photographer, Nobuyoshi Araki. This remarkable installation, meticulously curated by Filippo Maggia, provides an immersive experience that delves into Araki’s artistic vision and unique style.
The Bisazza Foundation’s Unique Tribute to a Legendary Artist
“Love-Dream, Love-Nothing” takes its inspiration from a private room within the Rouge Bar nightclub, situated in Tokyo’s bustling Shinjuku district. Araki often frequented this elegant establishment after completing his photography sessions. The installation thoughtfully reimagines the ambiance of this iconic location, with a slight twist—instead of one private room, the Bisazza Foundation’s version features two private rooms, creating a unique visual narrative.

Araki’s Iconic Influence
The first room replicates the Tokyo original, complete with an oval settee at its center, reminiscent of the original. It encapsulates the very essence of Araki’s world, adorned with posters and bills from his exhibitions displayed along the room’s interior walls. This room serves as a beautiful reflection of Araki’s oeuvre and his artistic journey.
A Tribute to Araki’s Legacy
The second room takes a different path and transforms into a library, paying homage to Araki’s prolific career as an author and artist. The installation brilliantly mirrors his extensive output of books, monographs, and show catalogs, which have reached over 500 publications worldwide over his 50-year artistic journey. Additionally, the library room showcases small dinosaur models, which remain integral to Araki’s artistic compositions.
Beyond Photographs: A Glimpse into Araki’s World
Araki’s photographs created exclusively for Bisazza grace the walls of the “Love-Dream, Love-Nothing” installation. Beyond these masterful images, the room also features photographs acquired by the Foundation. However, the pièce de résistance comes in the form of three recent works commissioned in early 2019: three calligraphies personally crafted by Araki, employing the traditional Japanese “shodō” technique. These calligraphies offer a glimpse into Araki’s poetic sensibilities, emphasizing his deep connection to the world of women and his exploration of the intricate boundaries between life and death, beauty and decadence, and the stark contrast between white and black.
“Love-Dream, Love-Nothing” not only encapsulates the essence of Araki’s artistic prowess but also commemorates the enduring influence of a legendary artist. The installation masterfully presents the journey of an artist who has redefined photography and challenged conventional boundaries. As it finds a permanent home within the Bisazza Foundation, this groundbreaking installation continues to inspire and evoke emotions, reminding us of the profound impact of art and culture on our
