Inside the Vision of Genes Lecoanet Hemant: Designers Speak

Genes Lecoanet Hemant

Genes Lecoanet Hemant, the iconic Indo-French fashion label, has unveiled its newest store in Chennai with a spectacular launch event at Express Avenue Mall. Renowned for seamlessly blending Parisian elegance with Indian craftsmanship, the brand continues to captivate fashion enthusiasts with its distinctive style. This milestone reflects its unwavering commitment to delivering globally inspired, yet locally crafted, designs to discerning fashion lovers across India. The grand opening celebrated the fusion of cultures and creativity that defines Genes Lecoanet Hemant, making it a memorable moment in Chennai’s fashion landscape.

What key moments shaped your design journey across cultures?

Our design journey has been deeply influenced by our experiences in both Paris and India. Starting in Paris, we immersed ourselves in the world of haute couture, honing precision and elegance in our designs. The transition to ready-to-wear brought us to India, where we explored its diverse culture and traditions. This duality of influences—India’s rich artistry and Paris’s refined craftsmanship—shaped our vision to create a brand that balances heritage with modernity. Each collection reflects this cultural dialogue, offering timeless and versatile pieces.

How does sustainability influence your designs?

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Genes. From prioritizing natural fibers to adopting digital printing techniques that minimize waste, we are committed to eco-conscious practices. We also research eco-friendly pigments and work with upcycled collections to ensure responsible design. Our initiatives, like Silai Wali, repurpose textiles, supporting inclusivity and ethical craftsmanship. We believe fashion should enable self-expression without compromising the planet, and we strive to innovate with sustainability in mind.

How do you blend tradition with contemporary demands?

Blending tradition with contemporary demands is a thoughtful process for us. For example, our designs often incorporate elements inspired by Indian heritage, like checkered patterns reminiscent of Kanchipuram textiles or botanical prints that reflect India’s natural richness. These are paired with the clean lines and minimalism of French design to create pieces that are modern yet rooted in tradition. This intersection ensures our collections resonate with diverse audiences while staying timeless.

What challenges have you faced working in Paris and New Delhi?

The challenges in merging two distinct cultures like Paris and New Delhi lie in understanding their unique nuances. In Paris, we’re seen as the “Indians of Paris,” while in India, we’re viewed as the “Frenchies.” This dual identity requires us to navigate different expectations and styles. Another challenge is balancing the fast-paced demands of ready-to-wear with the artisanal craftsmanship that both cultures cherish. However, these challenges have enriched our designs, allowing us to create collections that are truly global yet deeply personal.

What inspired the launch of your store in Chennai, and how does it reflect your vision?

Chennai’s vibrant culture and evolving metropolitan spirit made it an ideal choice for our new store. Its warmth and openness align perfectly with our brand ethos. The store reflects our vision of democratizing fashion, making finely crafted clothing accessible to a broader audience. Our collections—daywear that complements the city’s modern lifestyle and eveningwear that respects its traditions—are a testament to this balance. We’re excited to see how Chennai embraces this blend of contemporary and cultural design.

What’s your advice for young designers aiming for global success?

Our advice to young designers is to embrace their roots while thinking globally. Authenticity is key—understanding and celebrating one’s heritage allows for unique storytelling. At the same time, a global perspective fosters innovation and opens opportunities for collaboration. Sustainability should be a priority, as the future of fashion lies in responsible design. Finally, be versatile and adapt to changing demands, creating pieces that are timeless and meaningful.
