The exceptional artist, Kelly Nunes presented a series of Immersive Installations under the collection – the Celestial Cycle. The artworks were presented at the Age of Union’s Earth Centre in Montreal, Canada.
The breathtaking series comprises various rooms like the Earth Room, Glacial Room and so on. While being different thematically, their concept was the same- the healing power of nature. Kelly Nunes’ Immersive Installations focus beautifully on nature’s healing qualities. The main goal of the artworks was to show the therapeutic impact of nature. It shows how even the gentle sound of a breeze fluttering can help us feel calm from the heart’s core.
On the other hand, the Immersive Installations also give out a powerful statement. It whispers to us the urge to conserve nature. Rest assured, it will heal on its own. All we gotta do is give an impetus, a helping hand to it, to get back to its original form. Interestingly, apart from being a renowned artist, Kelly Nunes also specialises in music composition and scenic design. And this is a living indication of the fact that his works are often holistic and meaningful.
The Enchanting Spell Of Immersive Installations:
Speaking of Kelly Nunes’ work, the Immersive Installations were placed in the form of rooms. Each of these rooms were designated for a particular natural element, acting like a wellness retreat. Starting with the Earth Room, the space was a haven for multi-sensory experiences. It highlighted the charm of Earthly creatures and their movements through vegetation, soil, nature sounds and bespoke lighting. Additionally, interactive lighting and scenographic design elements came together to mimic magma, seismic activity, electrical storms and the Aurora Borealis. These Immersive Installations of the room were majorly constituted of paper-tile, made out of waste paper by Dear Human Design Studio. All the lapping sounds of these natural wonders leave a calming effect by lowering the adrenaline and cortisol levels of people suffering from stress.
The next room, Glacier Cave captured the morphological nature of glaciers. It portrayed how glaciers keep changing from ice to water, standing in various states of freezing, thawing, extending and such. This glacial fascination was entirely constructed from post-consumer plastic water bottles. All of these materials and sound-light effects showcase the crackling and thawing of glaciers. Ultimately, Immersive Installations like these help the visitor to understand the need to save these glaciers before it’s too late. While, the Sun room was a thoughtful design to highlight the space for meditation and to keep darkness away.
Delving Deppee In The Universe:
The other rooms helped us peep into the intriguing universe, supporting us to find ourselves too in the journey. If you are the one who has a great affinity for physics, then probably the Black Hole Room is the one for you. This room was a permanent multi-mode installation commissioned by Dax Dasilva for his Montreal home. It actually captures its inspiration from the Spirituality pillar in Dasilva’s book, Age of Union. It delved deeper into asking the world to seek light in the dark and unveil new potentials. And hence, it metaphorically spoke of black hole mysteries and how one of the ways to healing is to know the unknown.
The next, the Moon room, rendered the cosmological essence and experience of different moons. As you enter the permanent installation, you’d observe a large sphere hanging from the ceiling, showcasing a slow video of the moon. The surrounding four walls are made in such a way that they often create the illusion of multiple moons. Just imagine standing in this room, shining under the moonlight beauty with serene silence- that’s the curing power of nature!
All these Immersive Installations together work on the concept of ecological healing by placing us in the huge, expansive world. The materials used- post consumer plastic, reconstituted waste, etc are also an ode to environment preservation. Kellya Nunes’ Immersive Installations aimed to take us on a short trip to explore the power of nature. From our simplistic walks to gigantic forests, nature offers us the reason to be at peace. These installations assist us to reflect on this and try to make the metropolitan world easy to absorb.
